Reading Proficiency

Students who participated in Mind Meets Music attained an overall increase of 24% in reading proficiency rates in the 2015-2016 academic year as compared to the 2014-2015 baseline year. According to the United States Department of Education, Mind Meets Music’s goal was to increase reading proficiency by 5% over four years. In just one year Mind Meets Music not only met, but greatly exceeded that goal!

Decrease in Achievement Gap

It is important to note that our control group schools started off with higher test scores than the schools implementing the Mind Meets Music program. In fact, during the baseline data collection, WestEd found the control group schools were achieving reading proficiency at a rate 46% higher than the Mind Meets Music schools. Between the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years, schools implementing the Mind Meets Music program had significantly reduced that 46% achievement gap to 25%!

The average attendance rate for treatment students at these schools rose from 92% during the 2014-2015 academic year to 93% during the 2015-2016 academic year.
