Introducing the Mind Meets Music App!

Introducing the M3 App!

We are ecstatic to finally share our application with you! The Mind Meets Music App (M3 App) is a tool allowing early elementary students the power of using music to cultivate academic success. The M3 App was developed to create a FREE application supporting the world’s number one resource, children! It offers an additional method of learning for emerging early elementary readers, ages four through nine.

Shown above is a Parkview Elementary School student playing the app for the first time during the school’s Literacy Night.

The M3 App was created to increase student recognition of English Language Arts (ELA) Sight Words by utilizing words from the Dolch Pre-Primer (Pre-Kindergarten) through 3rd Grade Word Lists along with the Dolch Noun List. Word decoding and phonemic awareness are also key components. Students are asked to match word families (rhyming words), as well as identify the number of syllables within words through the use of music notes. By gradually increasing complexity from level to level, the M3 App supports improvement in reading fluency. Additionally, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) themes are integrated in game content and varied syntax, exposing students to many different sentence structures.

Mind Meets Music recently received a new set of data. And we are SO EXCITED to share it with you!

Reading: Students who received Mind Meets Music attained an overall increase of 24% in reading proficiency rates in the 2015/16 academic year as compared to the 2014/15 baseline year.  According to the United States Department of Education, Mind Meets Music’s goal was to increase reading proficiency by 5% over four years. In just one year, Mind Meets Music not only met, but greatly exceeded that goal!
In the 2014/15 baseline year, the reading proficiency of students receiving Mind Meets Music was 46% less than their peers in the comparison group.  However, data collected by WestEd during the 2015/16 academic year showed the reading proficiency of students receiving Mind Meets Music had significantly shrunk to only 25% less than their peers in the comparison group.  This data reveals a 21% reduction of the achievement gap between the test and comparison groups!
Attendance: The average attendance rate for students receiving Mind Meets Music rose from 93% during the 2014/15 baseline year to 95% during the 2015/16 academic year.  According to the United States Department of Education, Mind Meets Music’s goal is to increase attendance by 3% over four years.
Student participation: 95% of classroom teachers agreed that participation in Mind Meets Music engaged students, encouraged participation, impacted learning, and impacted attitudes.
Classroom teacher benefits: 87% of classroom teachers agreed that Mind Meets Music has caused them to reflect on their teaching beliefs, helping them develop integration capacity, comfort, and tools.

September Newsletter

Here Comes the 2016-2017 Academic Year!

You may notice the neighborhood splash-pads and playgrounds becoming empty as the month of September wraps up… you know what that means, school is almost back in session! Most West Michigan schools start September 6th, and Mind Meets Music sessions are in full swing starting the beginning of October. Our Master Teaching Artists have enjoyed the summer off and are excited to come back to work! MTA’s will be attending a two day in-depth training mid-September, before heading back to the schools to observe their new students in the classroom. Classroom teachers and students are anticipating the arrival of Mind Meets Music back in their classrooms!  This year Mind Meets Music is adding 30 additional classrooms, including partnerships with William C Abney, Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, and Explorer Elementary in Kentwood Public Schools.  We will be serving a total of 215 classrooms, in 29 schools, with over 4500 students!  We are excited as we look forward to the 2016-2017 academic year.  We have great plans in store for our students and the community – including beginning the year with a bang at Artprize!  If you haven’t already visited a classroom to observe the Mind Meets Music program in action, plan on visiting this year!

Congratulations Shelly!

The Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce announces Shelley Irwin as the 2016 ATHENA Award winner! According to the Chamber of Commerce, ATHENA Award winners are “honored for their leadership, have mentored and provided opportunities for women and contributed to the community in a positive way”. Shelly has been a devoted board member of Mind Meets Music since our inception. We are not at all surprised of Shelly’s various achievements including the 27th ATHENA award. We can not think of anyone more deserving! Shelley Irwin, you’re a rockstar!

Happy Birthday Mind Meets Music

Celebrate with us!

Meet Jalen*.  A slight first grader from a poverty stricken area of West Michigan. Jalen, like many of his classmates, struggled with literacy, academic achievement, classroom behavior, and low self-esteem.  Enter Mind Meets Music.  With its short catchy songs, its brain enhancing curriculum, and literacy skill building techniques, Jalen was intrigued. Over the year, his academics soared.  His reading and behavior improved. His self-esteem blossomed. His classroom teacher attributed these improvements primarily to the Mind Meets Music program!  Jalen is one of our many success stories.

Because of your generous support of our organization, we have reached over 6,500 preschool through second grade students over the past three years.  But we have a greater vision.  We want to touch and change the lives of even more Jalens in the next school year.  We want to transform early education in West Michigan for thousands more low income early learners.  We would be honored to partner with 300 people giving $300 in celebration of Mind Meets Music’s third birthday making this vision a reality.  If we can gather this support in our birthday month of July, we will be well on our way to transforming the lives not only of the children of our community today, but of the leaders of tomorrow. Now is the time to invest in the most vulnerable children of West Michigan.

Donate Now!
We thank you for your continuous support. Together, we can make a real impact in thousands of children’s lives right here in West Michigan.
